Big Sky Fit Kids is a free activity and nutrition program that teaches the importance of being physically active and that fitness is fun!
Big Sky Fit Kids (BSFK) is the youth component of Shape Up Montana. BSFK is a free activity and nutrition program that teaches the importance of being physically active and that fitness is fun! It encourages youth teams to increase their individual physical activity levels and fruit and vegetable consumption through recording. This 3-month program for Montana kids runs February 1 through May 1.
Each BSFK team may have 10-30 members and needs an adult team captain who will report the team’s mileage monthly online. Kids receive an individual mileage sheet to record personal activity, with 12 minutes of physical activity representing one mile.
As part of the BSFK program, Eat Right Montana supplies nutrition tips for the adult leaders to share with the BSFK participants. These nutrition facts represent simple steps that kids can make to eat smarter every day. Children are also encouraged to track their fruit and vegetable consumption throughout the program. In addition, children receive an individual “Fruits and Veggies Make a Difference” tracking chart.
Teams who submit mileage for all 3 months are placed in a drawing to win one of three $500 monetary awards. If teams submit numbers for both mileage and fruit and veggie consumption they are entered into another drawing for a $500 award.
BSFK also offers Fit Kids Day May 6 – 10 for school children across Montana. Schools agree to provide their students with 30 minutes of continuous physical activity one day that week. Schools with 100% participation of those able will be entered in a drawing for three $500 monetary awards.
