Geriatric Stimulation Training

The Montana Geriatric Education Center (MTGEC) is an interdisciplinary center which provides geriatric education and training for Montana health professionals, higher education faculty, and students, so they might better meet the health needs of the older residents of the state.

The Geriatric Simulation training provides empathy lessons to understand the physical challenges older adults face such as tremors, hearing impairments, visual impairments and impairments to mobility.Experiential learning is impactful. To be able to ‘feel’ like an elderly adult really drives home the challenges they face with everyday tasks and health care workers can internalize the struggles they experience while in the Geriatric Simulation suit and it enhances their innate empathy.

The Geriatric Simulation Suit lessons consist of the full suit-empathy lesson, the visual impairment lessons and the hearing impairment lessons. All focus on building understanding and empathy as you process through the impairments while conducting tasks that you’d normally execute in daily life – the suit makes you feel very much like an older adult with physical impairments.

This program is targeted at any member of the interdisciplinary team – Certified Nursing Assistant to MD.  They  also train volunteers who work with older adults as well as EMT’s and Fire Fighters.
